Alongside decoding (for reading) students need to be taught encoding (for spelling). The backs of the tiles are colour-coded to the phases ofLetters and Soundsso that beginner spellers can use just the Phase 2 tiles, making simple CVC words. As students progress the other phase tiles can be added systematically.
