Example using two sections

Fill the middle section of the box with 8 balls (lock the others in the left hand section).

Close the lid over the locked balls and also close the lid over the middle section.

Shake the box.

Uncover the middle section to see if you are right.

Example using three sections

Fill the box with 20 balls and uncover the right hand section.

Cover the middle section and then shake the box.

You can see that 2 balls have landed in the left hand section and 12 balls have landed in the right hand section. How many are in the middle section?
