Spain, 1936, and Will wants to enlist with the Brigades. Discovering that he
is too young, Will joins the Six Bells Brigade a group of young men committed
to the Republican cause.

He is inspired by their courage and optimism qualities he will need in the
hard months of fighting to come.

Republicans in their fight against the Fascists under General Franco.

Will Viljoen experiences it all fierce combat in the mountains, rescuing the
wounded at the battle of Jarama and finally desperately seeking shelter as
bombers of Francos ally, Adolf Hitler, destroy the town of Guernica.

Yet against all odds, the Freedom Tree growing in the centre of the town,
survives: a heartening message, I hope, to young readers fascinated by 20th
century events, the theme of human rights and the struggle against tyranny.
